First, thank you very much for even considering taking part in this playtest.
One of the things that has often frustrated me—both as a player and as a Game Master across many different systems—is how frequently everything comes down to numbers, modifiers, and which squares the characters occupy. I enjoy a crunchy game system, but my goal here was to create something different: a game that captures the tension, excitement, and spectacle of a cinematic space opera.
Many science-fiction RPGs attempt to recreate the experience of a bridge crew living on the knife’s edge, but the mechanics do not always deliver that feeling. Sometimes the Game Master is blamed, and in certain cases that criticism may be fair. However, the system should also give the Game Master the tools needed to create tension, communicate danger, and make every decision feel consequential.
This playtest offers a fiction-first RPG in which your words, actions, preparation, and command decisions have more influence over the outcome than dice modifiers alone. Fiction-first gaming is not a completely new idea, but Command Under Pressure uses it to create a specific kind of experience: the escalating pressure of a crew confronting several impossible problems at once.
My goal is to give players and Game Masters the tools to create the kind of edge-of-your-seat session that ends with everyone looking around the table and asking:
“How in the hell did we survive that?”
With your help, I believe we can grow this system into an RPG that all of us will be proud to bring to the table.
