The Barrett REC7 –M486
As a writer, especially a writer of a military science fiction
novel, I wanted to explore what the future holds for our current
military. One of the weapons that is currently being tested, is
the Barrett REC7- M486. This weapon uses parts from the
already existing M-16 but is a much more accurate and deadly
weapon. I’ve included a link for the curious to learn more.
The reason I have posted this information is to give the reader
an idea of what the AR-517 weapon is and why I used it in my
story. The main character, Colbosh uses this weapon because
of its reliability and the fact that it is the most common weapon
used by the CEF(Colonial Earth Forces). The only thing that
really separates it from the current day weapons is the scope
system. Being a futuristic tale I saw the need for modern
warriors to be able to introduce a smart scope.
I wanted the readers to know that I didn’t go crazy with the
ideas that handheld laser weapons would be prevalent in the
future; because projectile based weapons will never go out of
style. We have perfected this killing machine for generations to
come.

A current body armor being tested by the military is dragon
armor. It doesn’t use any steel plates. It’s light weight and can
stop an AK-47 bullet. This is a very impressive product, but the
problem is the cost. Most of the military forces in the story use a
modified version of this armor. One of the things I included in the
story is a more advanced version of this armor; I added a fluid
filled underlining that is flame retardant. The idea of the fluid layer
is to help protect the wearer from impact damage. Colbosh
wears this advanced version in the story. Most of the CEF wear
the basic issue with modified plating. I didn’t want to stray too far
from reality with the creation of the tech for this story. My
philosophy was to keep it simple and believable.

A futuristic shotgun that should send shivers down the spine
of any alien. Low recoil and automatic this weapon will lay
waste to anything that gets in its path. Unfortunately, this
weapon doesn’t make an appearance in my novel, but it
does make its debut in the short story that will be coming
out soon. Also it will appear in the next two sequels I have
planned out for the novel. This is a weapon I think that will
make a huge impact in modern forces and in the future.
